A lot of a building's heat is lost through it's glazing, increasing winter heating costs.

Most glass can now incorporate a low emissivity (low-e) coating which reflects radiated heat back into the room, but low-e glass does very little for other glass-related problems such as solar heat gain, solar glare and UV radiation transmission. And if you have existing glazing and want to upgrade, the cost and the disruption can be huge.

The most cost effective and least disruptive answer is an application of UV Shield low emissivity eco-window film, which can reduce the heat loss through the existing glass by up to 24%.

A typical u-value for a standard 4mm single glazed panel with no film is 5.71. With UV Shield Eco-film this is reduced to 4.31 making a winter heat saving of 24%.

A typical u value for a double glazed unit with no film is 2.72 but with UV Shield Eco-film this is reduced to 2.36 making a winter heat saving of 13%.

We have just fitted some tinted window film to an interior window in a builders merchants in Margate which shows access into the store office. The manager, John, is thrilled to bits because not only has it stopped the glare coming through from the sun on the other side of the corridor, but it has also reduced visibility into the office from those coming into the store. It doesn't mean the boys can sit with their feet up on the desk though! Good to have happy customers. It was an interesting job to carry out as well. The fitting day was hot and stormy and those little storm flies just love sticking themselves to the window film as you apply it - and guess what, they can't get out! Nightmare.

This week we have visited a client who wants to have his own designs etched into opaque window film. No problem. The designs are beautiful and they are being created into the shapes we need for the window film as we speak. It is also an ideal thing to do for children's bedrooms - they can have any shapes they like along the bottom of the window as a border. It also makes a real difference to bathroom windows, rather than just having the plain privacy film. Businesses also use the process having their logo on the shop font windows. All good ideas to think about.
